San Miniato is known as the Truffle Capital and is home to the biggest, most popular and best recognised festival for truffles globally, the Festival of the White Truffle of San Miniato. It was first held on the 26th of October 1969 in Piazza del Duomo, and bar a two year hiatus immediately afterwards, it has been held on the second, third and fourth weekends in November every year since. What began as a local market is now an international event that attracts tourists, chefs, food and wine producers and truffle fans from all over. San Miniato is inextricably connected to truffles, in fact, and 25% of all of Italy's white truffles are produced in the territory.
November is the heart of truffle gathering season and locals are well used to the tradition, many training dogs specially for the purpose and going out every Fall in search of the little gems for generations. During the festival a prize is given to the biggest truffle and to the oldest truffle hunter.

San Giovanni d'Asso, near Siena, also has a good truffle festival, which takes place on the second and third weekends of November. It even has a truffle museum that is open on the weekends. Additionally, there is another celebration of this delicacy in Volterra, where a white truffle fair is held in late October and early November each year.
