Although Stia is often referred to as the ‘source of the Arno’, the real source is in fact located 1,200 metres further uphill on the slopes of Monte Falterona.

Stia has an abundance of fresh water available for its use, including a spring which rises in the nearby park of Palagio Fiorentino and is pumped to the town centre where it flows out through twelve public taps.
Begin your exploration of this quaint little town in Piazza Tanucci which is actually triangular in shape. The piazza is framed by two arcades on either side which are filled with busy little stalls, shops, eateries and coffee bars to browse around.
Be sure to take a short detour to explore the intriguing interior of the church of Santa Maria della Assunta facing the piazza. The interior dates back to 1150 but the outer façade was redesigned in a Baroque style later in the 1700s.
See a beautiful sculpture finished in glazed blue and white depicting Madonna and Child. It was created by renowned sculptor Andrea della Robbia.

Textile production was once a thriving industry in Stia. The large wool mill here which was built in 1838 employed over 500 people at the height of its success.
Today the mill is a museum of wool production where tourists can come to learn the fascinating history of trade in this area.
