San Gimignano has been awarded as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, not only for its rich history, culture and beauty preserved by its fourteen remaining towers but also for notable buildings such as the palazzo Comunale, the Church of Sant’ Agostino and the Collegiate church here.

The towers in the town were erected by different families who grew to be quite competitive with each other! Towers grew rapidly in number, size and height until eventually, a law had to be passed that no tower could exceed the height of the Palazzo Communale.
