A Magical Art Museum By The Sea In Tuscany

Villa Mimbelli, exterior
Tuscany's Coast boasts lovely beaches, pretty views, incredibly well-preserved nature reserves, delicious eateries, wonderful fortresses and architectural gems, and seaside towns that range from sleepy little villages to major resorts with active an nightlife and plenty to see and do. However, compared to the bigger and more famous cities inland, there are comparatively few of the traditional attractions that one associates with Tuscany, like palaces and museums. Yet, the institutions of this kind that are littered sporadically throughout the area are rather special.

Take Livorno, for example. If you have found a vacation rental in Livorno, you will find that this charming seaside town only offers one public art gallery. However, it is well worth a visit and filled with wonderful pieces in a rather extraordinary setting.
Villa Mimbelli, interior
Villa Mimbelli is a 19th-century gem built in a Neo-Renaissance style that is surrounded by lovely gardens and houses the Museo Civico "Giovanni Fattori", or Fattori Art Gallery. The villa itself is a beauty with wonderful rooms decorated with frescoes by Annibale Gatti, rich tiled floors, coffered ceilings, luxurious details and trimmings throughout, and an incredible staircase connecting all three floors that boasts a balustrade featuring statuettes of cherub figures holding it up.

The Fattori Art Gallery, meanwhile, was opened in 1994 and is dedicated to Giovanni Fattori, an important figure in the Macchiaioli art movement. It is home to works of art by Tuscan painters dating from the 19th and 20th centuries, including pieces by Ulvi Liegi, Guglielmo Micheli, Renato Natali, Modigliani, Stradina Toscana, Cesare Bartolena, Lodovico Tommasi, Angiolo Tommasi, Vittorio Corcos, and Plinio Nomellini, among others.

Once you're done admiring the interiors, you can head outside and enjoy the wonderful and romantic gardens, which feature many exotic plant species brought into the garden from abroad. With so much happening at this one spot, it is very much a must for those exploring this part of Tuscany.
