The Disney-like Burano Lake

Lake Burano, dock
Burano Lake is like something plucked from a still of a Disney movie; its crystal blue waters and surroundings are incredibly beautiful. In fact, tourist guides often call it “Disneyland”.

The tranquil atmosphere, proliferation of wildlife and plants, and walking tracks make it the perfect part of Tuscany to go for a stroll on a cool evening as the sun sets over the water and transforms it into a swirling pool of colour or to spend a day bird-watching, exploring and taking photos.

Just find the perfect villa rental in Capalbio for you and yours nearby and you can begin exploring this captivating natural oasis for yourself.
Located only a short drive from Capalbio and inside a nature park, Burano Lake is home to a whole host of different animals, fish and plants. You will find a variety of salt water fish species including mullet and sea bream and birds such as ducks, cormorants, marsh harrier and crested cuckoo among others.

Other animals that make their home around the lake, hiding in the brambles, juniper bushes and myrtle, include lizards, snakes, porcupines and otters, wild rabbits and foxes.

For nature lovers, Burano Lake and the adjacent WWF oasis offer plenty of opportunities to spy animals in their natural habitats. The local flora is also beautiful, with rare wild bushes of juniper and pretty rock-rose among the many different kinds of plants.
Walking the numerous tracks around the lake will give you the chance to look for these creatures and plants but are also most enjoyable for those without much interest in animals. They wind through beautiful Tuscan terrain and lead you to observatories, lookout towers, photo huts and the visitor’s centre, where you can learn a bit more about the park and its history. The most impressive edifice located on the shores of the lake is the Torre di Buranaccio, a 16th century tower built as a defensive structure at the border of the Papal States and the Duchy of Tuscany.

The Lake of Burano was established in 1980 as Italy’s first World Wildlife Fund reserve and is situated on Tuscany’s best preserved piece of coastline. The area remains in its original natural state, a salt marsh that spreads over more than 230 hectares. The lake itself covers over 140 hectares and is separated from the Mediterranean sea merely by a long strip of sand dunes. It is a magical and beautiful natural haven that is a highlight for nature-lovers and those fond of scenic walks who are visiting Tuscany.
