Stop Off In Fivizzano Town For A Few Hours

Piazza Medicea
If you’re wandering through the scenic province of Massa Carrara in Northwest Tuscany then be sure to spare a few hours to explore the charming walled town of Fivizzano! It was part of the Republic of Florence during the 15th century which helped it to get a steady foot in play for the important area of Lunigiana which was a thriving place of trade via land and sea.

There are lovely attractions to see during your visit to Fivizzano. Begin your tour in Piazza Medicea where there is a superbly designed fountain in the centre. Visit the intriguing Fivizzano museum of printing located inside Palazzo Fantoni Bononi which honours the ground breaking work of Jacopo da Fivizzano.
Piazza in Fivizzano
In 1470 he printed the first books with typed characters! A fellow townsman, Agostino Fantoni invented the first type writing machine a studied the effectiveness of carbon paper. During the summer months, Fivizzano comes alive with the energy of two popular festivals. One is called the Sapori festival which is hosted in June and celebrates delicious local foods.

The other event is a palio celebrating the medieval sport of archery. This would be a superb event to visit as all of the locals get involved and there’s plenty of tasty food on offer to sample as you walk around and soak up the jolly atmosphere.
Fivizzano
In the afternoon, why not stroll up to the ruins of the church of San Giovanni in which a museum honouring him is built. See the carved marble lid of a sarcophagus on which there is a sculpted body of Leonardo da Fivizzano. He was a renowned orator whose sacred preaching skills were famous throughout the region.

Walk around the beautiful 16th century walls of Fivizzano which were rebuilt by the Medici family. A few hours spent wandering through Fivizzano would be time well spent during your cultural vacation to Tuscany! Stay in a cosy villa in Valazzana which is only four kilometres from Fivizzano and enjoy a wonderful tourist experience exploring the area.
