It begins with the story of a gentle young woman called Gherarda, the countess of Cana who frequently came to this area and stayed with the monks of the abbey of San Salvatore. The story continues with the introduction of a young man, the lord of Chiusi, called Adalberto who was in the local town of Buonconvento when he laid eyes on the lovely Gherarda. It was a mutual love at first sight between the two and they quickly began a romantic courtship.
Ghererda found a picturesque patch of green meadow in amongst the trees of her beloved forests where she and Adalberto spent many happy days. But the story ends sadly as Gherarda’s family arranged a marriage between her and the Count of Pitigliano.
Heartbroken, she arranges to meet her true love one last time in the meadow and tragically the two are forced to go their separate paths. Ever since, this land has been called ‘Meadow of the Countess’ and many couples come here to reminisce about the romance of this sad tale.
