Discover The Castles And Walled Towns Of The Tuscan Central Plains

Castle of Nozzano
Come and explore the beautiful Central plains of Tuscany and stop off at some of these historic spots along the way. Stay in a pretty villa rental in Lucca for a few days where you can easily commute around these nearby locations.

Begin your journey of historical discovery with a visit to the fortified town of Nozzano Castello located in the Serchio valley. Close to Lucca city, this quaint little town has been beautifully restored and offers magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.

From here tourists can see the castle of Castiglione and the striking Torre dell’ Aquila.
Porcari village and castle
The original castle that was built here was once one of the most important castles in all of Lucca but because of numerous territorial feuds between Lucca and Pisa, it was destroyed and rebuilt several times.

Now beautifully refurbished, visitors can enjoy a walk around it if they reserve a booking in advance of their arrival.

The ruins of the Castle of Porcari stand over a small village of the same name in the Central Plains of Lucca.
Montecarlo fortress
Although little remains of the castle itself, there is a fascinating history to be learned about it when you walk around Porcari village. See the beautiful church of San Giusto here also with its majestic white marble façade.

The fortress of Montecarlo is beautifully preserved, built on Cerruglio hill overlooking the scenic Valdinievole on one side and the plains of Lucca on the other. The lovely town of Montecarlo is built at the foot of this majestic fortress which was built in a striking triangular shape.

It was last used as a fortress in 1775 and now hosts frequent wine and cultural events. It’s open for public visitations from May to October on Saturdays and Sundays 4-7.30pm. It’s €5 entry or €8 for a guided tour.

The Rocca of Villa Basilica sits in the valley of the Pescia Minore on a cliff edge. It has a pretty diamond shape and was once a truly mesmerising sight to behold. Its walls still remain in good shape but the castle itself is in ruins.

Come and see these historic and cultural gems for yourself on your next vacation through Lucca province in Tuscany!
