Walk Through Some Eerie Ghost Villages In Tuscany!

Toiano cemetary
There are many charming towns and villages across Tuscany that are well worth a visit on your next vacation to Tuscany but why not do something different and visit some of the unusual ghost villages of the region and find out why they were deserted! Stay at a lovely villa with swimming pool in Tuscany where you can experience a magical holiday of both adventure and relaxation!

The medieval village of Bergiola in Lucca province was abandoned when a terrible earthquake flattened its buildings in the early twentieth century. But tourists can still visit and learn more about this little hamlet from information boards on display.
Fabbriche di Careggine
Walk around the remains of a village called Toiano, close to Pisa which still has the remains of a medieval drawbridge and castle to admire. It can be quite strange walking through these streets an imagining what life was once like here.

The town of Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni in the Valdarno area of Tuscany lies in the midst of what was once a busy mining industry. However rock extractions carried out here destabilised the ground beneath the town and parts of it began to sink, threatening the safety of the people living there. In the sixties, the town has to be evacuated.

Today, a stable part of it remaining is home to the Museum of Mining and the Cavriglia territory which is certainly worth a stroll around.
Buildings in Col di Favilla
Go and see an underwater village that emerges from a lake once a year! The village of Fabbriche di Careggine was purposely built to house skilled blacksmiths from Brescia but due to flooding, it has to be abandoned.

In the modern day it lies at the bottom of the Vagli Lake in Lucca province for most of the year but when the lake is drained, tourists can see the fascinating stone houses, church and bridge that still exist here. This is truly a magical sight to behold

Other interesting ghost towns and villages include Lucchio, close to Bagni di Lucca, Col di Favilla in the Apuan Alps, Mirteto in the hills of Pisa and Rocca San Silvestro in the Maremma.

So why not plan a travel itinerary and see some of these ghostly settlements for yourself?
