Amongst the colourful southern Tuscany countryside beside the village of Vitaleta, lies a charming little house of praise called the Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta. One of the most photographed churches in Tuscany, this mystical building used to be the home of a Renaissance statue of the Madonna sculpted by the artist, Andrea della Robbia in 1590. Built in the middle of a hill, this spectacular tourist attraction was restored in 1184 by the architect Giuseppe Partini and was recently classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Dotted across this magnificent countryside are many peaceful holiday villas and luxury accommodation to stay in and soak in the undisturbed natural beauty of the area.

The statue of the Madonna was moved to a church in the nearby city of San Quirico also known as the’ Church of the Madonna’ where it can be more easily seen by the many tourists that flock here to photograph its beauty. Every year a festival is held in honour of the statue of Madonna in this town; sweet music can be heard floating from the church during the celebrations and is a worthy experience for any tourist to witness on their exploration of this inspiring area in southern Tuscany.
A beautiful way to explore the Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta and the statue’s new home in San Quirico is by enjoying a day long cycling tour throughout the fortified city walls and out into the colourful countryside.
