Visit The Beautiful Empoli Area Of Tuscany!

During your next vacation to Tuscany why not spend a day or two in the glorious Empoli area in the lower Arno Valley of Florence? There are several charming towns and villages here that are of Roman origin which have plenty of things for tourists to see and do! For those with an interest in history, there’s an excellent museum of Palaeontology in Empoli. Located in the Ghibellino Palazzo, visitors can learn about the geology of the area, the evolution of humans and other species as well as discovering more about the nearby area of Valdarno.

It’s open on Saturdays and Sundays from 16.30-19.00pm and guided visits are available anytime during the week upon request. Entry is free at weekends and €3.50 during the week. Call 057 1537038 for more information.

The town of Empoli was once under the rule of the rich and powerful Guidi family and then passed under the control of Florence when the province battled for ownership of it in 1182. There’s a lovely market held here every Thursday in the town square which first began in the 11th century! ‘Passeggiata’ which is the tradition of going for a leisurely stroll through the streets and piazzas before dinner, is still a popular pastime for many of the older couples living here. So why not join in with this relaxing way of life and work up an appetite before sitting down to a delicious meal and perhaps a tasty bottle of wine?

This area was once famous for its green glass production; mostly used for bottling wine and olive oil. Its trade thrived especially in the period between the two World Wars. There’s a lovely new glass museum here now where visitors can learn all about the history of this local industry.
